Brown Fused Aluminium Oxide(BA) also called Brown Corundum, with three kinds of raw materials alumina, carbon material and scrap iron in arc furnace melting reduction. The main chemical composition of it is Aluminium Oxide(AL2O3), its content is 95%-97%, and the others like Fe2O3, SiO2, TiO2, etc.. Brown Fused Aluminium Oxide is the most basic abrasive medium, because of its good grinding performance, wide application range and low price, so that it is used widely. According to various dimensions / standards, brown fused alumina can be classified many classifications as follows:

1) According to the chemical composition to distinguish, BA can be divided into Grade A, Grade B and C.

The content of Al2O3 in Grade A is more than 95%. Grade B contains alumina (AL2O3) about 90%. Grade C about 80% Al2O3. Grade B and C are made of the lower grade of lumps of Fused Lumps. Classification of Brown Fused Aluminium Oxide Lumps is up to the crystallization precipitation resulted in smelting process, in the middle part of the electric arc furnace is the best crystalline and the impurities is the least. Lower grade still has a certain degree of hardness and the characteristics of refractories. 

2) Distinguished by its shape(related to bulk density), BA can be divided into the Roller, the Barmac and the Ball Mill.

The bulk density of the Brown Fused Aluminium Oxide with Barmac line is higher than that of the roller and the ball milling, and roller is the lowest. This is because of their different shapes. The more cubic its shape is, the higher the bulk density.

3) Distinguished from the smelting furnace, it can be divided into dumping furnace(also called tilting furnace) and fixed furnace. Compared with the fixed furnace, the production of brown fused aluminium oxide in tilting furnace is better for most applications. Its appearance is more apparently in the content of SiO2. The content of SiO2 in the production of BA is less than that of the fixed furnace.

4) By the content of TiO2, it can be divided into making the resin grinding wheel and the vitrified grinding wheel. The content of TiO2 in BA is generally below 3%. The higher the content of TiO2, the grinding wheel will be more blue. Just from the color, it is used to make vitrified grinding wheel will be better. Relatively speaking, for making the resin grinding wheel, the content of TiO2 is not so strict. It mainly depends on customers requirements.

5) By how to remove its dust, we have BA water washed, acided washed and dry washed.

6) Specical treated Brown Fused Aluminium Oxide: High Temperature Treated BA, Iridium Treated BA, Ceramic Coated BA etc. These special treatment can increase its durability, wear resistance and enhance its chemical and physical performance for production of abrasive tools.
