Calcined Brown Fused Aluminium Oxide
We offer Brown Fused Aluminium Oxide heated under high temperature in
- FEPA F8-F220 for bonded abrasives
- P8-P220 for coated abrasives.
Calcination is the process of treating Brown Fused Alumina with heat, usually under 1050(which we call medium temperature) or 1350 Celsius Degree(high temperature, also called Blue Fire Brown Fused Alumina, named by its light blue color after calcination. This treatment can reduce or remove the foreign articles(carbon, wood chip, white spot, free iron etc.), pre-heat the material, make the impurity react chemically, and also improve the toughness, wear resistace and hydrophilic performance. These improved characters are important for free abrasives and also grinding performance of abrasive tools.
Advantages of Calcined Brown Fused Alumina over normal types.
- Eliminate the abnormal expansion of BFA: In the electro fusion process, the abrasive contains Ti203, Ti0,TiC, TiN. When they are calcined, they are further oxidized, and the volume increases accordingly, such that the volume change of the abrasives exceeds its normal expansion.Abnormal expansion will cause crack on the surface of abrasive tools during production. Calcination can eliminate such possibility.
- Improve the Toughness and Grinding Performance of the BFA: It is mainly due to the Titanium content in the alumina crystals during the calcination process of the abrasive. It is oxidized to cause a lattice contraction, thereby improve the compressive strength of the BFA. Calcination also compensate for the internal stress induced during the granulation process. So grinding tools produced by calcined abrasive are not only durable but also more self-sharpening.
- Hydrophilic quality of the Brown Fused Alumina is improved: Calcination treatment can increase hydrophilic performance of BFA by about 3 times. This is because impurities such as volatiles on the surface of BFA are removed, the low melting point material was burned off, and the capillary phenomenon on the abrasive surface is increased. Hydrophilic quality is crucial to coating of abrasive on various surfaces and also the durability of abrasives.
- Improve the strength of the grinding tool produced: BFA after calcination treatment removes the impurities such as the volatiles on the surface, improves the purity and cleanliness of it, so improves the binding force between the grinding particles.
